The moment Lauren’s name popped up asking if Hog Roast Kendal could come back and cater for another South Lakes Housing event, our answer was already yes before she’d even finished her sentence.
For anyone unfamiliar, South Lakes Housing is an independent, not-for-profit housing association working hard across South Cumbria, North Lancashire and parts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to develop and manage affordable homes. They’re not just ticking boxes – they genuinely care about the communities they serve, and that kind of organisation is exactly the sort we love supporting in any way that we can. Especially if that support involves cooking up a mouth-watering menu.
This time, around 120 guests came together at Netherfield Cricket Club where we’re thrilled to say our Southern Slow Roast Menu was on the cards. Now, we’ll be totally honest with you and admit the sky wasn’t exactly playing ball – grey and overcast in that very particular way the north of England does so well – but here’s what Hog Roast Kendal has learned over the years: the right food has the power to change the entire atmosphere of a day, regardless of what’s happening above the clouds.
And the spread more than held its own.
Between the butter-soft beef brisket, BBQ pork butt, butchers sausages and Cajun-spiced whole-roasted chickens, the guests had four completely different flavour experiences to explore, and the chafing dishes told the whole story – picked clean before the afternoon was out. As for the sides, Hog Roast Kendal knocked it out of the park with a line-up of creamy mac and cheese, refreshing mixed salad, creamy gourmet coleslaw and a mix of sweet potato and classic fries filled which made sure every plate looked unique, while BBQ pulled jackfruit sliders topped with plant-based slaw gave veggie and vegan guests something genuinely worth looking forward to rather than a polite consolation prize.
That’s a good day by anyone’s measure – and one we’re hoping won’t be the last time South Lakes Housing has Hog Roast Kendal’s number on speed dial.
